Deep Dish Dungeon Demo Guide: Length, Saves and Content
Everything about the free Deep Dish Dungeon demo: how long it is, saving, co-op, controller support, what was removed, and what the full game adds.
The free Deep Dish Dungeon demo has been on Steam since February 2026. It is the best way to try the game before the October 13, 2026 launch. This guide covers what the demo includes, how long it lasts, how saving works, and what the developers deliberately held back for the full release.
How Long Is the Deep Dish Dungeon Demo?
There is no fixed answer, by design. In Dev Blog #6, creative director Saulo Camarotti explains that he did not want a short, linear demo. The full game is about the feeling of being lost and choosing which path to explore next, so the demo is longer than most demos. It has hidden secrets, treasures, different paths, materials to craft and recipes to cook, and no time limit. You can keep playing for as long as you like.
How long it takes you depends on how thoroughly you explore and whether you play solo or in co-op. Most of the time goes into searching rooms, returning to camp and experimenting with recipes.
Can You Save in the Demo?
Yes, since June 2026. The original demo had no save system because the team thought a short playthrough would not need one. Saving was the most common player request, so Dev Blog #9 announced that the save system from the full game had been added to the demo. You can stop at any time, save and load later.
What Is in the Demo
Based on the official dev blogs and patch notes, the demo includes:
- The core loop. You explore, gather resources, return to camp, craft and cook.
- Combat with skeletons and critters. The June update added camera shake, new skeleton animations and the ability to interrupt attacks, and it rebalanced the stamina bar.
- Shield blocking and object rotation. Both were added after the Discord playtest in February 2026.
- Cooking appliances, including the cooking pot, rotisserie, campfire and a cooking table near the end of the demo.
- Food spoilage, along with food baskets that keep food fresh longer. See the cooking guide.
- Harvestable bat and scorpion carcasses, which feed into cooking table recipes.
- Online co-op with lobby rejoining. See the multiplayer guide.
- Controller support, with key-binding screens that switch between controller and keyboard in real time.
What the Demo Leaves Out
The developers have been open about what you will not see in the demo:
| Held back | Official explanation |
|---|---|
| Bosses | Only a few exist in the full game, so they are not spoiled in the demo (Dev Blog #6) |
| Big puzzles | Also saved for the full game (Dev Blog #6) |
| The Azurea mushroom cave | Removed in demo update v0254, together with its coal piles, cilantro, bats and cuica |
| Mushroom drawings in First Camp | Removed in v0254 |
| The inside of the Jaguar Door and the Magic Silver Dagger | Removed in v0254 |
| The full cooking system | The demo has a cut-down version; carcass harvesting is the "cornerstone" of the full feature (Dev Blog #9) |
If you found the Jaguar Door and could not get inside, that is expected. Its interior was cut from the demo on purpose.
Is the Demo Good Preparation for Launch?
Mostly, yes. The no-map exploration, physical inventory, camp-based crafting and cooking-as-progress systems all work the same way in the full game. Your progress does not transfer, but your knowledge does. Two more points are worth knowing:
- The developers revised the demo after feedback. For example, you can no longer reset a torch's time at a wall Torch Holder; Saulo admits he thought that was cool, but everyone else thought it was a bug.
- The full game was described in October 2026 as having many more quality-of-life improvements, informed by watching demo players.
FAQ
Is the Deep Dish Dungeon demo free?
Yes. It is a free download on Steam, separate from the main game page.
How long is the Deep Dish Dungeon demo?
It has no time limit, and the developers made it longer than most demos, with multiple paths and secrets. Length depends on how much you explore.
Does demo progress carry over to the full game?
No. The developers state that the demo save file does not carry over.
Where does the demo end?
The developers have not described a single ending point. Because there is no time limit, the demo lasts until you have explored what is available. Bosses, big puzzles and areas such as the inside of the Jaguar Door are held back for the full game, so being unable to open them is expected.
